WhyTheyRank started with a question that anyone who's ever built a website has muttered at their screen: "Why on earth is their page ranking above mine?"

The page that wouldn't budge

A few years ago, one of us was running a small tool website. It was genuinely useful, the content was solid, and it had climbed its way up to page one of Google. Then it stalled — stuck at position four, just below a competitor's page that, honestly, didn't look any better.

So began the ritual every site owner knows too well: open both pages side by side, squint at them, and try to spot the difference. View source. Count the headings. Check the title tags. Poke at the schema. Copy-paste snippets into five different free tools, each of which checked one thing and asked you to sign up for the rest. Hours later, we had a messy spreadsheet and a headache — but we did finally find it. The competitor had FAQ schema, a faster-loading hero image, and a tighter title tag. We didn't. We fixed those three things, and within a few weeks, we'd taken the top spot.

The frustrating part wasn't the fix. It was how long it took to find something that, in hindsight, a computer could have spotted in seconds. That was the moment WhyTheyRank was born: what if a tool just did all that squinting for you — fetched both pages, compared them factor by factor, and simply told you what was different?

What we built

WhyTheyRank does exactly one thing, and tries to do it really well. You paste in your page and a competitor's page, and it runs a side-by-side diff across 100+ on-page, technical, and AI-search factors — titles, headings, schema, links, security headers, Core Web Vitals, and the newer GEO/AEO signals that decide whether AI search engines cite you.

Then, instead of dumping a wall of red X's on you, it writes out a specific, plain-English fix for every gap you're behind on. Not "add more content" — but "add FAQ schema, here's the exact block, here's where it goes, here's why it matters." The kind of answer we wished we'd had that first frustrating afternoon.

Why it's free

Plenty of SEO tools are powerful — and priced for agencies with budgets to match. We think the basic question of "why is this page ahead of mine?" shouldn't be locked behind a subscription. So the comparison tool is free, with no account and no limit on how many pages you compare.

We're upfront about what it doesn't do, too. WhyTheyRank checks the signals that are fully derivable from the pages themselves. It doesn't measure backlinks or Domain Authority — that data requires paid third-party APIs, and we'd rather give you accurate free checks than half-accurate paid-data guesses. When backlinks are the real gap, the report says so plainly.

Who's behind it

WhyTheyRank is built and maintained by a small, independent team of web developers who spend most of their time building and ranking their own tool websites. That means every feature here comes from a real itch we've personally had — this isn't a tool designed in a boardroom, it's one we use ourselves, most weeks.
